— I mean, we use qualitative and mixed methods a lot as well, if we do not have any insight into what we are researching or to gain extra insight to think about a variable we might have missed. But to say that you would use the interview to inform policy it’s just wrong. You can use your findings to inform a rigorous (objectively structured) survey design that can then be used to try and test for statistical significance on a big enough and representative sample, for the applicable population. But anything else is a logical failure and is not based on philosophy and is an opinion peace/journalistic article at best. You can’t use a journalistic article to generalize from the few folk you chose for your interview to generalize to the whole population, that’s a logical failure. It doesn’t have to do with ‘flavor’ off sociology it is just wrong in its logic.
