or, Aliens, Culture, and the Art of Pissing on Boundaries.

I’ve been thinking about Nirvana’s song Territorial Pissings and that one line: “When I was an alien, culture was not an opinion.” It hits differently when you stop to really think about it. What did he mean by that? Was he just being poetic, or was he tapping into something deeper—something maybe even beyond this world?

There are stories that Kurt might have had some connection to the Pleiades, or at least, he seemed to hold onto the idea of something more beyond what we see. Whether that was a literal experience or just a feeling deep in his bones, it’s hard to say. But that line about culture not being an opinion makes me wonder.

So much of human identity is tied to culture, history, and heritage, sometimes to the point of defining our entire existence by what came before. But what if you’re from a civilization where culture isn’t a choice—it’s just ingrained in who you are, in your very way of being? Maybe that’s the difference between us and some of these otherworldly civilizations. They don’t just debate culture, reshape it, or abandon it. They are their culture, and it runs through everything they do.

If that’s the case, then what does it mean for us? Are we, as a species, being pulled into something like that? If certain off-world groups are trying to seed their way of thinking here, are we resisting, or are we unknowingly assimilating? Is the way we view identity, history, and even our purpose shifting without us realizing it?

And what about the surveillance, the AI developments, the constant push toward control? Is all of this humanity trying to hold its ground in a silent war of influence? If so, how many of us will even remain ourselves on the other side of it? If one agenda pushes us into an extreme, does that mean we’re automatically playing into another agenda’s hands?

Maybe Kurt knew, deep down, that something bigger was at play. Maybe that’s why he wrote the things he did—because he could feel it, even if he couldn’t explain it outright.

Or maybe we all know, on some level, but we’ve been trained to ignore it.

Where is all of this going? And do we even have a say in it?
